The Map Collage Project
This project of creating collage work from Thomas Guide map books began while I was looking for a new place to live. Perusing the old paper maps stimulated my imagination as to what humorous, outrageous, and expressive arrangements those linear Los Angeles freeways could create throughout Southern California. Line has always been an important element in my work, and the freeway lines worked perfectly. This was the beginning of my work on the idea of “place,” which inspired several more projects, such as Place of Memoir, The Portraits of Place, The Meeting Place, and Place of Difference.
